We had an awesome weekend in Stillwater, and a very productive Sunday {unexpectedly}!
Friday Evening/Night
On our way to Stillwater, we were welcomed to God's Country with a gorgeous sunset {filled with orange}. We knew it was going to be a great evening from the very first second!
OSU Homecoming 2014 "House Dec" winner |
On Friday I mentioned that we were going to visit the "house decs". I am sure this is a term most people haven't heard of - but this is an example. This was not the one that Keelie had been helping create (more on that one in a moment), but it was the one that I seemed to get the best picture of AND it won.
Here is your lingo lesson for the day: You view the house decs {short for House Decorations as far as I am aware} at Walkarounds {a formalized viewing where they shut off the streets and you tour}. Each house {actually a partner of houses: a fraternity and sorority pair together and they build the "dec" in front of the fraternity} begins the process in the Spring of every year for the following Fall. They begin "pomping" {Chicken Wire + Tissue Paper - see below} within 2 weeks of school starting (typically).
Pomping Example during Walkarounds |
There are thousands of people - all mushed together between houses, in the streets, and no where near each house dec {most of them move, but for how long is always an experiment}
Then we went out on a fun date {wasn't planned, but was SOOOO appreciated} to Hideaway:
Best fried mushrooms in America. I have ranch in this picture, but only because I don't believe in giving away all of your secrets {Parmesan Peppercorn} |
Saturday - GAMEDAY!
Unfortunately we lost {boooooo} - but fortunately Stillwater celebrates regardless. It was a fun day. It may, or may not have, started out like this:
My mom said it was redneck, we say genius {it was too hot to tailgate too long - in OCTOBER - so we set-up a mini-gate}
Sunday
We cooked some freezer meals for some family of ours who recently lost a very loved one. To say that everyone is grieving with them {and for them} is an understatement. However, if I have learned anything, it is that when tragedies happen, family threads get pulled closer and tighter. And when you are so sick you don't feel like eating, that is when a hot meal {or freezer meal} can really come in handy.
We also cooked Sunday family dinner with the cutest nephew in the world, hung some pictures (!), and cleaned the kitchen thoroughly {we are still in the stage of the floors that we have to remove the furniture to do so - yuck!}. But good news: we got some awesome "after" shots for the kitchen that we hope to reveal soon.
